CONTEXT
Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organisation, founded in 1971 and working in 70 countries around the world. MSF provides medical assistance to populations in crisis, regardless of race, religion, belief or political affiliation. In PNG, MSF is supporting the Department of Health to improve access to care for tuberculosis patients in Gulf Province and NCD Province.

JOB PROFILE
MAIN PURPOSE:

• Assisting in the nursing activities with hospitalised patients, according to nurses’ and doctor’s prescription, universal hygiene standards and MSF protocols, standards and procedures in order to ensure the delivery of quality medical care for patients

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. General role:

• Assisting the nurse in organizing and providing care and treatments to patients, respecting at all times, the rules of hygiene, safety, comfort, dignity, medical secret and patient confidentiality. Giving response to nurses’ requirements in case of an emergency
• Participating in the surveillance, monitoring of the patient, and reporting to the nurse any relevant information
• Compensating patients’ possible lack of autonomy by assisting and helping them in feeding, personal hygiene, movements and general comfort
• Participating in the monitoring of nursing activities (correctly fill in patient files, etc.) and ensuring a relevant transfer of information between duty teams. Reporting any problem arising in the care unit, especially the loss, robbery or damage of equipment or medicines
• Ensuring cleanliness of his/her working environment (including facilities, material, linen, equipment, and carrying out the sorting and disposal of waste)
• Working together with the nurses, cleaners and care-takers
• Participating actively in the hospital platform (meetings, committee,.), trainings and in the basic health education sessions
• Participating in any other related activities as requested by the line manager
• Performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the biomedical equipment following user manual and protocols. Alerting the supervisor in case of malfunctioning of any device

 

1. Specific role:

Registration/Triage:

• Do a triage according to protocol
• Vital sign for all cases before sending to HEOs
• Update the TB register. Organize the TB patient’s card and lab results in the filling cupboard and keep it organized
• Receive the patients identified as suspect cases for the sputum collection and give the instructions for the sputum sample production.
• Receive & validate the sputum sample and place in the cool box and/or send it to lab according to lab flow designed.
• Register on “TB suspect register” the suspect cases identified during the day.
• Register the new cases on the TB suspect register and update the TB register with the results from lab. Contact the patients with positive results and other cases according to clinicians’ instructions and give an appointment date.
• Update the appointment book with each newly register TB patient
• Following the pre assigned SOPs check and send the follow sputum, review , PEC or medication
• Identify the patients with adherence problems and refer to clinician and/or PEC.
• On a daily bases inform TS liaison officer about patient missing appointment

DOTs:

• Administer daily oral and/or injectable TB medications to patients according to their treatment regimen. Record on patient’s treatment cards and clinic files.
• Identify patients with treatment adherence issues and bring it to the attention of the clinician/ PEC
• Following the weekly review Plan do vital sign for all patient to be reviewed
• Collect blood and sputum sample requested by clinician
• Do rapid diagnostic test like Malaria, urine test, urine HCG(pregnancy test) and so on
• Do routine ECG and Audiometer test as clinicians request
• Follow the specific SOP drafted for DOT
• Do routine BSL for all diabetic patients during DOT

Medicine Dispense:

• Check the treatment card if all follow up investigation is done and give medicine exactly according to the next appointment given
• Explain the treatment and how to use the patient’s card to new patients.
• Check the adherence of treatment following the patient’s card notes about missed and taken doses.
• Inform the appointment for next visit to the clinic.
• Record in the daily tally sheet the treatment given to each patient.
• Support the supervisor to carry out inventory when the weekly order is being prepared.
• immediately inform the supervisor about any medicines or material possible rupture.
• Check all medications for expirary date before adminstration
• Check and report to the supervisor any signs of averse effects of the medication idendified

Infection Control:

• Use personal protective equipment when indicated.
• Follow hand hygiene rules according to MSF protocol.
• Clean your work space using standard MSF disinfection solutions.
• Practice safe disposal of sharps material.
• Respect the procedure for the segregation of waste (soft, organic, sharps, glasses).

NB:

• Any other task will be defined and assigned according to the project needs arise
• Be flexible for routine rotation in all departments of the clinic (DOT/triage/registration/ Dispensary according to the need and Cover/ replace CHW in outreach team when necessary).

• Based on MSF NCD Project, Port Moresby

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Certificate or Diploma of Health Worker is essential
• No experience required
