By Grace Lome Did you know why a lot of Papua New Guineans including children, teenagers and Adults are developing so many life style diseases like Tooth Decay, Childhood Obesity, Childhood Depression, High Blood Pressure, Heart Attacks and Diabetes, today? Well I got news for you! This is what Dr. Robin Oge outlines in his presentation during an interview on my Health Watch Program on CMNTV recently. (Dr. Robin Oge has Masters in Public Health from Oxford University UK.and his a Public Health Practitioner /Emergency Medical Doctor at the Port Moresby General Hospital) … The use of Energy Drinks which is now becoming a favorite to many Papua New Guineans is the main cause of so many life style diseases that are currently faced in the society today. Energy Drink like BU, Red Bull, Kik and other Soft Drinks that are being consumed on a large scale are very dangerous for your health as they contain a lot of Caffeine and Sugar. Caffeine is an active ingredient that is found in Energy Drinks like BU or any other Soft Drinks , that is about 3 spoons of Ground Coffee which totals up to 128mili grams of Caffeine .
Now there is huge difference when you consume caffeine in a BU Can which is cold and caffeine in a Hot Cup of Coffee, you take a higher doze of caffeine in a short period of time when you gulp an ice and cold BU, than when you sip a hot coffee. For those who are taking a Can of Energy Drink, There is about 19 teaspoons of sugar that is used in a typical Can of Energy Drink, which is equivalent to 76grams of sugar and 3 Spoons of Ground Coffee that makes up a Can of Energy Drink like BU. The effects of Energy Drinks are much more pronounced according to Dr. Robin Oge, it has a lot of health risk attached to it and you also spend a lot of money on these products. Dr. Robin Oge, recommends the only Drink that’s pure is water: Water is free, you pay less and it also contains the natural elements that are required by your Body.
