MENTAL health centres in PNG will partner with existing community health centres to provide rehabilitation services to drug addicts, Social Change and Mental Health Services Directorate director Dr Uma Ambi says.
“We will work closely with the Health Department to bring mental health services and addiction clinics to communities,” she added.
Uma said the directorate was in the process of mobilising resources and developing mental health programmes to complement the services of community health centers.
“The programmes include counselling services, therapy talks, medication and other efforts to address mental health. “Many young people who are suffering from substance abuse and are too timid to seek professional help because of cultural stigmas.
“People think getting help on mental health are for the mentally ill only.
“We want to break this stigma through our efforts with communities,” she added. Uma was responding to Port Moresby General Hospital registrar emergency medicine Dr Clair Tomdia’s presentation on the effects of methamphetamine on mental health on day two of a National Conference on Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the National Capital District yesterday.
