Papua New Guinea PROVINCIAL Health Authorities (PHA) must be vigilant and be prepared for a nationwide surge in the number of Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases, a doctor says. National Pandemic Response deputy controller Dr Daoni Esorom said New Ireland and some other provinces had reported a high number of cases recently in the fifth wave of the Covid-19 that resulted in a surge mainly of the omicron variant. From the number of the samples tested New Ireland has a 30 per cent positivity rate hence Dr Esorom with a five-member team from the National Control Centre (NCC) went to the island province and assisted the PHA in responding to the Covid-19 surge. Of the 277 tests done 84 were positive which Dr Esorom said was indicative of a larger number of transmissions.
“We anticipate that there is widespread community transmission of Covid-19 in the province as Kavieng General Hospital is the only facility that is testing for Covid-19. “The current surge is a reflection of what is going to happen in the country between December and February,” he said. Dr Esorom urged all the PHAs to be vigilant and be prepared for a nationwide surge in the number of Covid-19 cases. Following the festive season, Dr Esorom warned that more cases were expected there and throughout the country which would put a strain on the health system. The team visited the Kavieng Hospital, Namatanai Hospital, and Lakurumau, Lemakot and Tinkoris health facilities where they conducted triage assessment and identified activities the PHA needed to undertake to respond to the surge.
