Newly appointed Health Minister Elias Kapavore says the first thing he will do is to review the procurement process of medical supplies, and implement the national health standards, endorsed in 2011 but not fully implemented to date.
Like the four other ministers newly appointed, Mr Kapavore thanked Mr O’Neill for having the confidence in him.
“Health is one of the key target areas and a very important indicator for the Government. Sir Puka has done his best in the last couple of months,” he said.
“Health sector is a very important area and I thank the Prime Minister for having confidence in me in appointing me in this area.
“The first thing I will do is see to it that we review some of the procurement process in place and see how the procurement is being done and especially ascertain why the medical supplies have not been distributed accordingly or what the problems are. We will review some of these things including the logistics arrangement.
“We will also be doing some major adjustments on the procurement processes, the companies involved, and their reasons why they have not been delivering the past couple of years, it’s an important area.
“It is important, I would have anticipated staying on as Public Service Minister as I have started a lot of programs to overhaul the sector, but Prime Minister has had the confidence in me and given me the Health ministry, I am happy and I will do my best, my past nine years working in hospital with some months as the CEO of the West Sepik Health Authority, I take on board the responsibility with experience and look forward to improving the sector.
“One of the areas I also want to see improvement is the commitment, making sure we implement the national health standards, endorsed in 2011 but not fully implemented to date and when I was CEO I was one of the team leaders doing one of the surveys in the hospitals and I want to see that commitment carried out and done and if we can go back to looking at plans in place and policies that have not been implemented and what we have lacked in addressing, I am looking forward to it,” he said.
