The country's only kidney specialist says non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension and obesity are growing at an alarming rate, and remain the biggest killers in PNG.
Nephrologist at the Port Moresby General Hospital, Dr. Steven Bogosia says kidney failure is the leading cause of death globally, and this is the same in PNG.
He says the death rate from diabetes which is closely linked to the kidney, is alarmingly high, with 7 000 reported cases at the Port Moresby General Hospital since 2013.
Dr. Bogosia says the rise has been attributed to people's ignorance of what they eat.
