Papua New Guinea has recorded two new COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Saturday May 22, increasing the total number of deaths to 156. The deaths, a male and a female between the ages of 48 and 59 were reported in West New Britain. Also in the last 24 hours, 54 cases have been reported with Manus reporting the highest of 24 cases. The National Capital District reported 12 cases, Morobe six, Western Highlands five, Simbu two and Eastern Highlands, West Sepik, Central, Jiwaka and Hela reported a single case each. Of the 54 cases recorded, 31 were males and 23 were females. Their ages range between 10 to 80 years. At the time of testing, 36 cases were showing symptoms of COVID-19.
The country’s COVID-19 cases now stand at 15,187 with 156 known deaths. A total of 14,122 recoveries have been recorded. All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases. Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 166,453,443 including 609,506 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.
