The Marape-Steven government has been given 1 week to respond to the PNG Nurses Association petition, failure to do so will result in a nationwide strike. PNG Nurses Association General Secretary Gibson Suine says the government has failed in all aspects to support frontline health workers to fight covid-19, which has now resulted in the death of their college. Mr. Suine says the petition highlights issues concerning the safety of nurses in terms of standard of operations, PPE’s, ventilators and risk allowanced which they have fail to provide health workers. He says the State of Emergency is purposely for “Health” and the government should focus on equipping health workers with all required personal Protective Equipment Siune claims the government has also failed to coordinate and provide good governance in terms of leadership within the Department of Health. Health Minister Jelta Wong says in response assured the nurses and the association that the petition will presented to the Deputy Prime Minister and tabled at the National Executive Council for urgent deliberation. He met with the nurses this morning. Mr. Wong added that health is his main priority and he will ensure all outstanding issues are sorted out as soon as possible.
