THE Health Department has begun commissioning health functions in provinces following the Provincial Health Authority Act 2007.
The Provincial Health Authority roll out has begun in Western Highlands, Eastern Highlands and Milne Bay.
Following them will be West New Britain, Enga, West Sepik and Manus.
The provincial health authority brings together two health service management systems – the provincial health and hospital services – into a single management system.
Provincial health is managed and administered by the provincial government while the public hospitals come under the health department.
The authority will avoid a duplication of services because all health services in the provinces including those run by the churches will come under it.
The board and chief executive officer will run a management team to deliver health services in the districts.
