Prime Minister Hon. James Marape says Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) and Angau Memoral Hospital in Lae will become the two major referral hospitals in Papua New Guinea. He said this on Thursday (July 22nd 2021) when witnessing the historical first-ever stenting procedure at PMGH, and presenting K10 million on behalf of Kumul Petroleum Holdings Ltd (KPHL) to PMGH for development of its Cancer Centre. PM Marape said the two referral hospitals would offer specialist health care for the growing population of PNG, until such time that funding allowed for expansion of other hospitals in the country. “That (expansion of other hospitals) is something we can come to into the future, with funding availability based on our plan into the future,” he said.
“We cannot do everything at the same time with resource constraints, strategies and strategic interventions. “We must do something to stop the ‘export’ and flight of kina elsewhere for medical attention, especially for specialist care. “In that context, Port Moresby and Lae will become national specialist hospitals, while (at the same time) attending to outpatients and everyday care. “With the focus on Port Moresby and Lae becoming specialist hospitals, we’re ticking off heart here (PMGH), we’re constructing cancer facilities here, we’re ticking off a cancer facility in Lae, and we will move into a heart facility in Lae.” PM Marape said all people of PNG would have access to specialist health care in Port Moresby and Lae once they were completed. He added that regional hospitals would take in some of the patients from the major hospitals in Port Moresby and Lae. PM Marape said provincial hospitals, district hospitals and health centres would all tie in to the major health system. “In a clear, visible plan that we will dovetail, I want us for the next 10 years to attend to improving capacity in our health system,” he said. “This is so that in 10 years’ time, when we look back, Papua New Guineans have a place of care in their country in all aspects of health care, our doctors are world-class.” Next : NCDPHA To Roll Out COVID-19 Vaccine To 3 Electorates In NCD Comments are closed.
