NINE unvaccinated people died at the Kimbe General Hospital from the Coronavirus (Covid-19), according to West New Britain Health Authority chief executive officer Stanis Tao.
“Five died before being brought to the hospital while four died while receiving treatment in the hospital,” he said.
Tao said 129 Covid-19 cases were reported as at 6pm on Monday.
“Only two (out of the 129) are fully vaccinated while one had received only the first dose,” he said.
“The rest of patients in the hospital have not been vaccinated.”
Tao said two patients in the isolation ward had severe symptoms.
“The rest are in home isolation and despite the confrontation between our team and the public on Saturday, the vaccination and awareness drive is progressing well.”
Health authority chairman Dr Mathias Sapuri said the confrontation was due to misinformation about the vaccination on social media.
“Such baseless information is misleading the public,” he said.
“We are not forcing anyone to get vaccinated.
“We are carrying out awareness based on global scientific research.
“And from our awareness, you choose whether you want to be vaccinated or not.”
Dr Sapuri, also the deputy chairman of the National Health Board, said the confrontation occurred at around 10am when the health team stopped a street preacher from using the site in Kimbe town where they were supposed to conduct the vaccination and awareness drive.
“The preacher had no permit from the National Pandemic Control Centre to hold a public gathering.
“When our team arrived, the preacher was asked to stop as he had no permit.
“However, people later stoned other health teams conducting Covid-19 awareness and vaccination around town.”
