DISEASES and conditions affecting the eyes are common in the country, but treatment and healthcare for it receive little support from the Government. Sight is one of the key senses in people and those who are vision-impaired or lose sight completely face difficulties. These remarks were made by the team leader of a team of specialists from Goroka, Damien Sungu, during an interview with The National in Kokopo last week. The Goroka eye team visited East New Britain two weeks ago and carried cataract clinics and operations at the St Mary’s Vunapope Hospital in Kokopo.
Sungu explained that common eye diseases and leading causes of blindness was the cataract while other common eye diseases was pterygium (eye growth). Sungu said almost 62 per cent of people had eye diseases and this was common in the developing countries and Papua New Guinea was an example. He said a cataract was cloudiness of natural lens and normally affected people aged 60. The National / PNG Health Watch Next : Concern Over Health System In PNG Comments are closed.
