IN-FIGHTING among staff at the Goroka General Hospital for top positions has caused the drop in hospital standard from Level Five to Level Two, according to Governor Julie Soso.
Soso requested Health Minister Michael Malabag in Parliament to look at the attitude of the public servants at the hospital and see how disciplinary action could be taken.
“This situation is ongoing and not clinical nor regarding health standards,” she said.
Malabag said things had developed over time.
“It is a question about senior public servants because they want to get power,” he said.
“It is not only the hospital but the Provincial Health Authority.
“Right now we have a big shortage of staff and I cannot get rid of specialists and nurses.
“We need the workforce and so they take it for granted.
“It is bad and affects the safety of our people.”
Malabag said because the Government was desperately needing health workers and specialists, the employees were taking the advantage to put public health at stake.
He said it is better if the workers consider their moral responsibility of serving the people.
