Bosavi Health Centre, nestled in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, has been grappling with a severe shortage of basic medical drugs since June of last year, leading to tragic consequences such as deaths from snakebites and preventable diseases. Fred Hamule, the community health worker at Bosavi Health Centre, shed light on the dire situation, attributing the lack of supplies to transport issues that have persisted for the past 11 months. Hamule typically procures supplies from the area medical store in Mt Hagen, but logistical challenges have impeded the delivery of vital medications to the health centre. As a result of the scarcity of medical resources, patients with serious medical conditions are forced to endure a grueling five-day journey to Moro for treatment, while those with minor ailments are redirected to Hela's Walagu health centre, necessitating a six to seven-hour walk.
The recent arrival of a chartered plane in the area provided a glimmer of hope, enabling Hamule to travel to Mt Hagen at his own expense to obtain supplies. However, the daunting task of transporting the much-needed medications back to Bosavi remains a formidable challenge, compounded by the exorbitant cost of air travel and the arduous journey by foot. While relief is anticipated with the allocation of medical drug boxes to Bosavi Health Centre and surrounding aid posts, transportation constraints threaten to prolong the ordeal. Hamule emphasized the urgent need for provincial leaders to intervene and facilitate the transportation of these life-saving supplies to the remote villages, where approximately 8,000 people are in dire need of medical assistance. The completion of the Waro to Bosavi road holds promise for improved accessibility in the future, but in the interim, the health and well-being of Bosavi's residents hang precariously in the balance, underscoring the pressing need for immediate action to avert further tragedies in the region.
