A WAMPAR Health Centre worker was stabbed on the neck with a broken bottle by a drunkard in Huon Gulf’s Wampar in Morobe last Friday. The centre’s health workers have retaliated by closing down the facility demanding communities to surrender the assailant.Community health worker Ruben Saurien was on his way to work from his home at about 9pm when the drunkard confronted him in Songkec near the centre. He said he was on call in the evening and returned home to shower and was returning to attend to emergency cases when the drunkard approached him. “I told him to move away as I was in a hurry to attend to patients of a car crash in Nadzab and pushed him away,” he said. “He punched me and smashed a 40-ounce bottle on my head.
“I was dizzy when he stabbed the broken end of the bottle into my neck and back.” Saurien said a police report was lodged and “we are calling on villagers to surrender the assailant to the police”. “We will reopen the centre only after the assailant is in police custody,” he added. Saurien’s colleagues also called on the Morobe health authority to build houses for workers in the hospital area and put up proper security fencing to prevent such attacks.
