SEVENTY unclaimed bodies at Angau Memorial Hospital morgue in Lae are to be buried next month, according to an official. The bodies had been at the hospital since January 2020. Angau social services officer-in-charge Wonding Yanon said they had given out notices through the media and through awareness for the public to remove the bodies but no one had come forward. “If the bodies are not claimed, we will conduct a mass burial in April,” he said.
“We are currently waiting for the notice of burial from the corona before we can proceed. “We have done awareness and families should come and repatriate their bodies and give them a decent burial. “The names of the unclaimed bodies have been published in the media and the list will be given to the corona next week and after that, they’ll give us the warrant of burial and we’ll proceed with the mass burial.” Yanon said the last mass burial exercise was carried out around 2018 and since then, many bodies had been there at the morgue.
