The Diploma in General Nursing spans three years and is competency-based, comprising a balanced blend of theoretical instruction and practical training, mirroring the structure of the Bachelor in Midwifery Nursing program. During the initial two years, students in the Diploma Program undergo training in both urban and rural health clinics. In the final year, they transition to Rural Health Centers or Hospitals situated within the MOMASE and Highlands region. Midwifery students engage in clinical practice in hospitals and rural health facilities to gain comprehensive exposure to diverse healthcare settings.

The academic calendar consists of two semesters for the Diploma of General Nursing Program and three trimesters for the Bachelor Midwifery Program. The first semester commences in January and concludes in June, followed by the second semester from July to November. Upon successful completion of their respective programs and meeting the requirements stipulated by the PNG Nursing Council, graduating students receive diplomas and degrees conferred by the Lutheran University of PNG (LUPNG), marking the culmination of their academic journey and the commencement of their professional nursing careers.

Entry Requirements 
​Admission to Lutheran School of Nursing ​ follows a selective process. Applicants must be below 35 years old and possess a Grade 12 diploma or its equivalent. Strong academic performance, particularly in English, mathematics, biology, and chemistry, is essential.  For non-school leavers, achieving "A" or "B" grades in these subjects is recommended. Community Health Worker (CHW) applicants can qualify with "C" grades in English, mathematics, and science from year 10. Beyond academics, the school seeks candidates with a suitable character, evidenced by recommendations from a school principal, a community leader, and (for CHWs) health supervisors.

Application Process

There are two ways students can apply for study at Lutheran School of Nursing.

1. School Leavers - School leavers must apply through the NOAS (National Online Application System ) run by the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology(DHERST). You must put First Choice as Mendi School of Nursing in your School leaver form.  
2. ​Non School Leavers - Students must upgrade their Grade 12 marks do not meet the requirement. Students must fill out a Non School leaver forms to apply as a non school leavers. 

Non-School Leaver (NSL) Applicants (self-sponsored) must meet the following criteria:

• Age must be below 35 years.
• Completion of grade twelve (12) or equivalent through Matriculation studies at PIMS or University’s open campus (DODL, DWU, UPNG) at the provincial level or FODE.
• Submission of a valid transcript showcasing 'A' and 'B' grades in English, General Maths (Maths B), Biology, and Chemistry (highly recommended), or 'C' grades in Major Maths (Maths A) or Physics.
• Demonstration of suitable character and personality, supported by satisfactory recommendations from the School Principal and community leader.
• All documents must be certified by a Commissioner of Oaths or a Magistrate at the Court House.

Community Health Worker (CHW) Applicants (self-sponsored) must meet the following criteria:

• Age must be below 35 years.
• Accumulation of 3-5 years of working experience.
• Attainment of 'C' grades in English, Mathematics, and Science in year ten (10) or successful completion of upgrades.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Demonstration of commitment to work and provision of strong character references from immediate Supervisor, PHA, or DNS for CHW Applicants.
• Recommendation from Provincial Health Advisors or relevant Church Health Secretaries.

Bachelor of Midwifery Program Requirements:

• Accumulation of at least six months of clinical experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
• Current registration with the Nursing Council and possession of a full license to practice as a nurse.
• Age must be less than forty-five (45) years.
• The last child must be two years and over at the time of enrollment.
• Proficiency in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet usage.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.

Course Fees 
Course fee varies from every year due to unstable state of economy of our country. Every year fees are increasing because of the high rates of inflation that affects the prices of goods and services. Therefore, before filling in this application form please ensure that your parents or guardians/ sponsor must have savings available for your fees. It is also important that you find a sponsor for the duration of your study.

1. Diploma of General Nursing – Fees are charged at K8, 500 to K11, 000.00

2. Bachelor of Midwifery – K18, 000 –K27, 000.00
