MODILON GENERAL Hospital in Madang Province is the lucky recipient of new orthopaedic equipmentbadly needed in the hospitals around the country. The Societyof Divine Word Missionaries of Poland in Europe donated the equipment after a successful application by the Doctor in Charge of Modilon orthopaedic unit, Professor Jerzy Kuzma. Prof. Kuzma is also a religious missionary of the Divine Word Missionary Society based in Madang, Papua New Guinea. Kuzma said yesterday (10.02.14) that the Russian-made device, technically called the Ilizarov External Fixator arrived in the county late last year and it has been lifesavingequipment for patients with limb abnormality. “The Ilizarov fixator can help in such conditions as healing infected and non-union bones(bones which have not joined together or fractured), with one defects as well as elongating shortened legs,” Prof. Kuzma said. The machines would heal a patient within few months or up to nine months depending on the nature of the defect. He said that the machine would change the lives of some of his patients from living with a lifelong disability. The equipment worth K50,000 had already saved a life of a fifteen-year old boy from Angoram in the East Sepik Province. HauleJigme had car accident in April 14, 2012 and his right leg was smashed. “I had no bones in my right legs…doctors removed my fractured bones and I was without bones,” Jigme recalled adding that he used crutches to support himself while walking on one leg. Professor Kuzma recently added one of the bonesfrom the patient’s left leg to the right legusing the aid of the life support equipment. “Jigme is ready to go back to school after leaving at grade five two years ago and this time he would walk without crutches,” the Professor said. The equipment,“Ilizarov fixator” was named after the founder and Russian surgeon who developed a ring fixator to treat very difficult bone patients in very remote parts of Russia in the sixties. This method has been developed and correctly used in specialised orthopaedic centres all over the world. Meanwhile, Prof. Kuzma stressed that hospitals in the country needed instalments of image intensifiers that would help surgeonsdo work more accurately and efficiently while operating patients using the latest and complicated tools like the Ilizarov fixator.
